Paris Pact Expert Working Group (EWG) meeting on “Detecting and blocking financial flows linked to illicit traffic in opiates originating in Afghanistan” (Pillar II) was held in the Hofburg Palace, Vienna, in hybrid format, on 30-31 May 2022. The meeting was hosted by Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and attended by over 130 nominated participants, representing 33 partner countries and 11 international / regional partner organizations, allowing for a full-fledged in-person participation of 60 delegates.

In the meeting newly evolved challenges in countering illicit financial flows along all three drug trafficking routes (northern, Balkan and southern) from Afghanistan were discussed, and operational best practices for effective counter-narcotics responses identified and shared.

The meeting documents will soon be accessible in the "Meetings" section of the Paris Pact’s web portal. The operational recommendations from the meeting will be reviewed for their endorsement at the next Paris Pact Policy Consultative Group Meeting, to be convened on 24-25 November 2022 in Vienna.
